Why Earned Media Matters More Than Ever in the Age of AI

There’s a rumor going around that PR is dying. That AI is eating the media landscape whole, that journalists are being replaced by algorithms, and that a well-crafted press release is about as useful as a fax machine.

We’re here to respectfully disagree. Loudly, with data.

The truth is, the rise of AI-powered search tools like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and yes, Claude, hasn’t made earned media less relevant. It’s made diverse, strategic media placements more important than ever before. And if your PR strategy isn’t built for that reality yet, it’s time to talk.

The AI Answer Engine Is Hungry, and It’s Eating Your Press Coverage

When someone asks ChatGPT “where should I eat in Austin” or “what’s the best plant-based milk brand,” the answer doesn’t come from thin air. It comes from somewhere. Specifically, it comes from the web of media coverage, editorial content, reviews, newsletters, blog posts, and broadcast transcripts that those AI systems have been trained on and continue to pull from in real time.

Here’s where it gets interesting: they don’t pull exclusively from the big guys.

ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude all reference a wildly diverse range of sources. National publications like Food & Wine and Wine Spectator, yes. But also regional outlets like Austin Monthly and the San Antonio Current. Local blogs. Niche newsletters. University media. Tourism boards. Podcast transcripts. The breadcrumb trail of earned media your brand has left across the internet is quietly, constantly being ingested by AI systems and surfaced to users searching for exactly what you offer.

UVM, or Unique Visitor Metrics, used to be shorthand for “size matters.” A placement in a 10-million-reader national outlet was worth exponentially more than one in a 40,000-reader regional magazine. That’s still true in some contexts. But AI doesn’t sort sources by traffic the same way a human media report does. It indexes relevance. Context. Specificity. A deeply detailed feature in a niche food and beverage publication can carry serious weight in an AI-generated recommendation, precisely because it says something meaningful about your brand.

What This Means for Your PR Strategy

The old playbook said: get in the biggest publication you can, and call it a win. The new playbook says: get in everywhere that matters, and make every placement earn its keep.

This is not a pivot away from big media. National press still moves the needle on brand credibility, investor attention, and consumer trust in ways that local coverage simply cannot. But it is an argument for diversification, and for treating your full earned media footprint as a strategic asset rather than a collection of logos for your website.

Here’s how we think about it:

Local and regional placements build the foundation. A feature in your city’s alt-weekly or a segment on the local morning news creates a layer of community credibility that no national press release can manufacture. It also tells AI systems that your brand is real, present, and relevant in a specific geography. For restaurants, hotels, and food and beverage brands, that geographic credibility is invaluable.

National placements establish authority. When Food & Wine calls you a noteworthy brand, that signal propagates across the media ecosystem. It unlocks doors with retailers, investors, and new markets. It also gives AI tools a high-authority data point that anchors how your brand gets described and recommended.

Digital publications and newsletters are the connective tissue. Placements in digital-native media, specialty newsletters, and industry-specific outlets create a web of credibility across multiple audiences and AI training sets. They also tend to be evergreen in ways that broadcast coverage is not.

Broadcast coverage is still its own category of magic. A segment on local news or a feature on a regional TV show does something print can’t: it creates a tangible, shareable moment. It also generates video assets, transcripts, and social proof that extend far beyond the original air date.

The Diversity Play: Why Placement Spread Is a PR Superpower

We were recently reviewing results for a long-term client, and the coverage map looked like a media strategist’s ideal portfolio: local city magazines, regional lifestyle publications, national food and beverage outlets, a wire pickup that ran in dozens of affiliates, newsletter features, and a broadcast segment that lived on YouTube.

That’s not an accident. That’s a strategy.

When we look at how AI tools surface brand information, the brands that appear most consistently and favorably are the ones with depth in their media footprint, not just height. A brand with five massive national placements and nothing else is less discoverable by AI recommendation engines than a brand with a sustained presence across local, regional, and national platforms.

Think of it like SEO, but for your real-world reputation. Multiple touchpoints across diverse and credible sources creates the kind of signal strength that AI tools recognize as authority.

A Note on UVM and What It Actually Tells You

Unique visitors matter. We’re not dismissing the metric. But UVM has never been the whole story, and AI has accelerated the conversation around why.

A 40,000-UVM placement in a niche beverage trade publication can carry enormous weight with the right audience, and with AI systems trained to match specificity to intent. A 5-million-UVM placement in a general lifestyle outlet may reach more people but say less about your brand in the contexts where it counts.

The question to ask about every placement isn’t just “how many people saw this?” It’s “who saw this, and will they remember it, share it, or have AI cite it when someone asks about my category?”

PR Isn’t Dead. It’s Running the Room.

There’s a version of this conversation where brands decide AI makes PR less necessary, that they can generate content, post it themselves, and let algorithms do the rest. We’ve watched that play out. It produces a lot of noise and not much signal.

What AI tools actually reward is exactly what earned media has always delivered: third-party credibility. A journalist writing about your restaurant is more trusted than your own Instagram caption, and that’s as true to a language model crawling the web as it is to a consumer deciding where to make a reservation.

The brands showing up in AI-generated recommendations, in round-ups, in “best of” lists, and in the answer boxes of voice search results are the ones that have invested in real PR over time. Not just a big launch splash, but sustained, strategic media presence across a range of platforms, geographies, and audiences.

That’s the work. And it’s work we genuinely love doing.

How Resplendent Thinks About This

We’re a boutique hospitality PR and social agency. We work with food and beverage brands, restaurants, hotels, CPG companies, and the kinds of creative, entrepreneurial concepts that deserve to be well-known. And when we build a media strategy, we build it to last, not just to look impressive in a quarterly report.

That means pitching the local food writer at the regional magazine and the national editor at Food & Wine. It means pursuing broadcast features and newsletter placements and podcast appearances and digital coverage, because every one of those placements is a data point in the ecosystem that AI tools are indexing right now.

We’ve secured placements that have moved product off shelves, filled restaurants, and driven retail expansion. We’ve placed clients in AP Wire, Wine Spectator, Eater, Austin Monthly, local broadcast segments, and trade publications that matter in specific categories. Not because we’re chasing logos, but because a thoughtful media footprint, built with strategy and maintained over time, is one of the most durable assets a brand can own.

If you’ve been told PR doesn’t matter anymore, we’d love to show you otherwise.
